What it does

ChatGPT has no export button. This Extension adds one.

Copy-paste loses your tables. Screenshots aren't searchable. And Ctrl+P only prints the part of the chat that happens to be loaded — which on a long conversation is a fraction of it. This extension puts a small toolbar at the top of ChatGPT: click PDF or MD and the conversation downloads properly formatted. If you only want to print it, here's how to print an entire chat.

Four steps, about ten seconds

How to save a ChatGPT thread as a PDF

No copy-paste, no scrolling to the top first.

1

Install the extension

Add ChatGPT to PDF Ultra Exporter from the Chrome Web Store, then refresh ChatGPT.

2

Open your conversation

Any chat — long, short, with images or code.

3

Click PDF or MD

The Ultra Exporter toolbar sits at the top right, beside Share.

4

Open and save

Press Ctrl+P and choose Save as PDF.

5

Or send it on

Print it, file it, or paste the Markdown into Word.

The part others get wrong

Long conversations export in full

ChatGPT uses a virtualised message list: messages are removed from the page as they scroll out of view. Every exporter that reads the page inherits that limit, which is why long chats come out with the middle missing.

  • Requests the conversation directly from ChatGPT rather than scraping what's rendered
  • No scrolling to the top and waiting for it to load
  • Works the same at 500 messages as at five
  • Reloaded the page? Doesn't matter — the export doesn't depend on what's on screen

Single messages and hand-picked selections still read the page directly, because for those it's the more faithful source.

ChatGPT to Word

Get ChatGPT into Word without the grey boxes

Copy a reply straight out of ChatGPT and Word inherits the whole mess: grey shaded backgrounds behind code, tables that arrive as run-together text, equations flattened into \frac{a}{b}.

The fix is to stop copying from the page. Export the message to Markdown or the HTML file, open that, and copy from there into Word.

  • Tables stay tables — real Word tables you can edit, not tab-separated text
  • No grey background to strip out afterwards
  • Equations and code keep their structure instead of collapsing
  • Headings map to Word headings, so the navigation pane works

Straight answer: there's no .docx export yet

The extension exports PDF and Markdown. A one-click Word file isn't built yet, and we'd rather say so than let you install and find out. The Markdown route above genuinely works, and it's a better result than the copy-paste most guides recommend.

The route that works

Export MD Open file Paste into Word

Choose what goes in

The whole chat, one reply, or the bits you pick

Most exports don't need the entire conversation.

The whole conversation

One click in the toolbar. Every message, in order, however long the thread has grown.

A single reply

PDF and MD buttons sit under every message. Handy when one answer is the keeper and the rest was working out.

Only the messages you tick

Turn on Select messages and checkboxes appear beside each turn. Your ticks stay put while you scroll.

What survives

Formatting that makes it into the file

Tables

Real tables sized to the page, not columns clipped at the paper edge.

Code blocks

Long lines wrap instead of vanishing past the right edge of the block.

Maths & chemistry

Equations stay equations rather than collapsing into raw LaTeX.

Generated images

Embedded in the file, so they still open after ChatGPT's links expire.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Install the extension, open the conversation, and click the PDF icon in the toolbar at the top right. A formatted file downloads — open it and press Ctrl+P (⌘+P on Mac), then choose Save as PDF.
ChatGPT has no export button of its own. The extension adds one: click the PDF icon and the whole conversation downloads formatted for printing — including the messages you haven't scrolled past.
There's no direct .docx export yet. Export to Markdown or the HTML file instead, open it, then copy into Word — tables, headings, code and equations carry over, and none of the grey background comes with them. Full detail above.
Don't copy from the ChatGPT page — that's what brings the grey boxes and broken tables. Export the message to Markdown or HTML, open that file, and copy from there. Tables stay tables and equations stay equations.
Most exporters read the page, and ChatGPT only keeps part of a long conversation there at a time. This one requests the conversation from ChatGPT directly, so every message is included whether or not it's been scrolled into view.
Yes. Every message has its own PDF and MD buttons underneath. You can also turn on Select messages and tick only the replies you want.
Yes. Generated images are embedded in the file so they still open after ChatGPT's image links expire, and maths and chemical equations keep their structure rather than flattening to plain text.
There's a free daily allowance and more free exports once you sign in; a paid plan removes the limit. Files are built in your browser — your conversations aren't stored on our servers, and there are no ads or trackers.
